Sandra Jones is a local artist whose most recent work references her upbringing in an instinctual meaty and fleshy Louisiana. Jones earned a Masters Degree in Fine Arts at the University of Illinois Champaign- Urbana before relocating to Baltimore in 1997. Abstract void of pop cultural references surrounding consumption prevalent in her earlier work, Jones’ recent series is honest in its struggle regarding linear discourses or conceptual arcs. These pieces are visceral, often guttural in their response to gnarly shadows and sinewy movements. Think of seed pods, meaty forms born from nature, or metonymic shapes, colors and fingerprints – worlds of collections that resist still life.
