Sandra Jones is a local artist whose most recent work references her upbringing in an instinctual meaty and fleshy Louisiana. Jones earned a Masters Degree in Fine Arts at the University of Illinois Champaign- Urbana before relocating to Baltimore in 1997. Abstract void of pop cultural references surrounding consumption prevalent in her earlier work, Jones' recent series is honest in its struggle regarding linear discourses or conceptual arcs. These pieces are visceral, often guttural in their response to gnarly shadows and sinewy movements. Think of seed pods, meaty forms born from nature, or metonymic shapes, colors and fingerprints - worlds of collections that resist still life.

As a 1976 graduate of MICA, with a BFA in Printmaking, my artistic mark since the 1980’s has been in mediums of hand papermaking and collage. Photography has been an integral part of my artistic development over the last fifteen years, providing documentation for the inspiration of my collages, but never shown as it’s own art form until 2008. My time spent behind the lens studying light, the reflective qualities of glass, and water, as well as fluidity and the movement of the latter, has been the inspiration for my latest body of work.

Artist Statement
In this collection of work I am introducing a new medium, encaustic, along side my oil paintings. Through use of a recurring language, houses, birds, fences I have interpreted various themes, such as containing, excluding and co-existing. I hope that my work shows the elements of play and exploration that occurs in their creation.

Biography
Heather Kirtland received her BFA in painting from the Maryland Institute College
of Art in 1997. She was a recipient if the Maryland State Arts Council Individual Artist Grant in that same year. Heather participated as a resident artist at the Holt Center for the Arts from 1998 – 2000. The Make-A-Wish Foundation and Montessori school have commissioned her work, and she has taught painting through private tutoring and at The Painting Workshop. She shows her works throughout the
Mid-Atlantic region and has exhibited in both Italy and Wales.
